THE POWER OF NEAT
In the pursuit of weight loss, we often focus on nutrition and workouts at the gym.
While these undoubtedly play a significant role in achieving a healthy body weight, the importance of Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) is often underestimated.
NEAT encompasses all the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating, or exercising.
Understanding and optimizing NEAT can be a game-changer in the journey toward fat loss.
Unlike intentional exercise, NEAT is the energy expended during daily activities such as walking, standing, fidgeting, and even household chores.
By increasing NEAT, you can elevate daily caloric expenditure without having to add more workouts etc…
Most of us don’t have time (or want to) add gym sessions in every day just to burn extra calories, it wouldn’t be sustainable.
Incorporating extra NEAT into your daily life can be much easier/sustainable.
Think walking to the shops, cycling to work, parking further out, being more active with the kids where possible etc..
It can be quite a shock when setting calorie targets for fat loss that they feel low, especially if you have an office job you likely just don’t move that much throughout the day.
Going to the gym might be the only time you really move your body.
It becomes super easy to gain fat living a sedentary lifestyle, unfortunately, our modern lives lean towards this unless we’re aware of it.
An added benefit of adding more NEAT into your daily routine is better control over your appetite, making it easier to adhere to the plan and avoid overconsumption.
WEEKLY TASK
Take notes of your movements this week and look at ways you can increase your NEAT.
Using a step tracker on your phone I’d like you to also give me your step count over the week.
Don’t worry if it’s not completely accurate and you don’t have your phone on you at all times but it’ll help give us an idea.
There’s a reason you might have heard people go on about getting 10k steps a day.. It will increase your NEAT in a big way!
These “steps” can come from any movement, clean the house to lose fat!
